Work Experience
In partnership with Wolverhampton City Council, the Music Service offers a programme of one week work experience opportunities to secondary students.

The Music Service measures its careers offer against the 8 Gatsby Benchmarks
1. A stable Careers programme
The Music Service has a strong tradition of supporting young people into further study and employment.
2. Learning from Career and Labour market information
Wolverhampton Music Service works closely with Hub Partners, Wolverhampton Cultural Education Partnership, West Midlands Music, Music Mark and Arts Council England to be well placed to understand the local, regional and national music industry and to connect the careers provision to the needs of the local and national economy.
3. Addressing the needs of each student
Music Service teachers work in partnership with schools to understand how best to support each student individually. We want our Careers support to feel accessible to everyone, and we strive to nurture every young person as they explore their own personal musical journey.
4. Linking curriculum learning to careers
The Music Service will attend Wolverhampton Careers Fairs and will support Careers events in schools to develop students’ understanding of where their knowledge, skills and interest in music might lead to. Music Service teachers offer performances in schools to promote an understanding of the wider role of the Music Service teacher and musician, and to inspire children and young people at all points along their musical journey.
5. Encounters with Employers and Employees
The Music Service offers a comprehensive work experience programme which gives an authentic taster of life as a Music Service employee. We have a vibrant and diverse staff who come from a wide range of musical backgrounds and are always happy to share their knowledge, skills and experience. We can give an hour to support:
- mock interviews
- guess my job
- school assemblies
6. Experiences of workplaces

7. Encounters with Further and Higher Education
The Music Service works in partnership with West Midlands Music, Birmingham Conservatoire (BCU), Royal Northern College and other national higher education establishments to facilitate student attendance at open days and other instrument specific focus days.
8. Personal guidance
If you have students that require specific guidance, get in touch with us directly. We can support individual students in exploring a wide range of musical pathways so that they can best understand how their musical interests and identities can be developed further. Personal guidance is given to support students to achieve national music accreditation through graded exams (UCAS points Grade 6-8) and to audition for places on Higher Education music courses.
